How To Prepare For Your First Session

Hooray!! You signed up for your first Pilates class! Now what?

Getting ready for your first Pilates class can feel exciting and maybe a little nerve-wracking. Try not to worry! Your instructor has got you covered and will guide you through everything you need to know during class. But here are a few things you can do to feel confident and prepared before walking into your first session:

1. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Pilates involves a lot of stretching, bending, and reaching movements, so you’ll want to wear clothes that allow you to move freely without being too loose or too restrictive. Choose breathable workout attire like leggings, shorts, tank tops, or form-fitting T-shirts that stay in place as you move. Avoid baggy clothing, as it can get in the way or make it difficult for your instructor to help you with form cues.

2. Grip Socks or Barefeet

Pilates is not a sneaker type of workout. We ask that you take class with clean, bare feet or grip socks. Grip socks have small rubber grips on the soles that prevent slipping on the reformer or mat, giving you extra stability during your workout. We have men’s and women’s grip socks available for purchase in the studio.

3. Arrive on time

Try to arrive 5 minutes before your first class begins. This gives you time to check in, ask questions about what to expect during the class, and get familiar with the studio environment. Arriving early allows your instructor enough time to give you a demo of the equipment, and to check in with you about any injuries or concerns you may have.

4. Water

While Pilates isn’t as high-intensity as some workouts, it’s still important to stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you to sip on before and after class. There is a water cooler in the studio for your use.

5. Have an Open Mind

Pilates is a unique workout that might feel different from other forms of fitness you’ve tried. Go into your first class with an open mind, ready to learn and ask questions. There is a bit of learning curve in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be surprised at how much you enjoy the precise movements challenges Pilates provides!

We can’t wait to see you in class! If you have any more questions before your first class, feel free to reach out to us at hello@momentummovementstudio.com or 610-864-3374. We’re here to help.
