Staying Healthy Through the Holiday Hustle

This time of year can be overwhelmingly fun, and overwhelmingly out of the ordinary.

The holiday season usually brings with it a change in our routines. The meal prepped breakfasts, limited drinking, and routine workouts of the fall suddenly morph into a plethora of cookies at the ready, more glasses of wine than normal, and maybe a missed workout or two in lieu of a holiday gathering. It's easy to let your regular workout routine fall by the wayside as you get caught up in the celebrations, with the promise to, “start again next month.”

But the obvious truth is, staying even a little consistent with your fitness routine during the holidays is better for your physical and mental well-being than giving up and starting again in January.

Movement isn't just about keeping your body in shape; it also plays a vital role in reducing stress, boosting mood, and maintaining energy levels, especially during this busy time of year. While it's tempting to hit "pause" on your health goals, continuing to move, even in small ways, can make all the difference in how you feel during this festive season.

So how can you navigate the pull between holiday fun and sticking to your workouts? Here are a few tips from our instructors on how they tackle this tempting season.

What is your go to de-stresser during the holiday season?

Wendy:
”When I get stressed during the holidays, I either go for a long walk with the dogs if the weather is nice or curl up with a Hallmark Christmas movie and a cup of tea if it's too cold outside. “

Maura:
”My go-to destresser: Cooking and baking! I especially love to bake for the warming shelters and homeless.  During the colder months, I put together little to-go containers and bring them to the park (Marion Square) to hand them out.  It might not sound like a ‘destresser’ to some, but it’s something I really love to do!”

Michelle:

“When I’m stressed during the holidays, I schedule a workout (I know, shocker!) — It gives me a single hour that checks so many boxes: movement, feeling healthy, distraction, socialization, a little bit of selfishness, offsetting the wine. It can be tough to stick to your workouts when you're feeling overwhelmed, but sometimes, when you're busiest, is exactly when you need it the most.”

How do you navigate the pull of the holiday parties and celebrations, while still feeling healthy and "on your game".

Wendy
“With so many parties and activities on the calendar, I try to get my workout done in the morning so there are no excuses.  Sometimes I get a full workout in, and sometimes I squeeze in a quick walk with the dogs — just something to keep my body moving.  If we have a party or dinner that evening, I eat a lighter lunch (typically a salad) to keep my nutrition balanced for the day.  And I alternate drinking water and wine while I'm at the party or dinner.  I love sparkling water, so if I throw a lime in no one will know if it's a cocktail or water.”

Maura
”I simply try to stick to my routine that gives me that ‘on point’ feeling (a little pilates, a little walking) and keep it calm and steady! I also make sure to add in a little extra time for myself and my loved ones.”

Michelle
"I hold nothing back at holiday parties—give me the cookies, the cheeseboards, the wine. For me, it’s all about the joy of gathering with friends and family, sharing delicious meals, celebrating and creating traditions. But to balance out my ‘all bets are off’ party mentality, I make sure my non-party moments are as healthy and routine as possible. I start my day with a protein smoothie, keep prepped salads on hand for easy meals, and aim for 3-4 workouts each week. I also try to plan a few gatherings with friends that focus on something other than food—like a workout, a walk, or even checking off some shopping together. It’s nice to have a way to connect that doesn’t revolve around eating and drinking."
